Tanni is the tops

Saturday 6 February 2010

Cardiff AAC life member Tanni Grey-Thompson has been appointed to the House of Lords as a Baroness. She will be a non-political member and has been elected as a "People's Peer". Tanni is best known for her athletic achievements, having won an astonishing 11 Paralympic gold medal. She has also won the London Marathon wheelchair race 6 times. Tanni was brought up in Cardiff and joined Cardiff AAC early in her athletic career where she was helped by Cardiff AAC middle distance coach Dave Williams.

She quickly made a name for herself and was to be seen training on the roads of Cardiff in amongst the traffic. As she was so low in her wheelchair she fixed a flag pole to it as a warning to drivers. She was also an inspiration to able bodied athletes who saw how hard she trained and how determined she was.

Tanni is extremely popular and has become a well known and public face. She was made a Dame of the British Empire in 2005 and was voted BBC Welsh Sports Personality of the year in 1992, 2000 and 2004.

Tanni now has to choose her official title. What's the betting that it will be Baroness Grey-Thompson of.........Cardiff?

Tanni serves on numerous bodies, including London 2012 and UK Athletics.

This honour is well deserved and the club is proud to be associated with Tanni.
