Rhys in team for Berlin

Tuesday 28 July 2009

Cardiff's 400m hurdler Rhys Williams has been included in the Great Britain team for the IAAF World Championships taking place in Berlin from 15th to 23 August, UK Athletics has announced today. Rhys joins Swansea's David Greene in the 400m hurdles. This selection is a just reward for Rhys's determination to come back after missing two seasons through injury. He was the bronze medallist in the European Championships in Gothenburg in 2006.

Rhys is gradually getting back to his best form. After clocking 49.38 in the Welsh Championships in June, he took second place in the UK Trials in Birmingham and, last Saturday, was timed at 49.68 (in lane 8) at the Aviva London Grand Prix.

Rhys is ranked 4th best in Europe with the 49.38sec he ran in the Welsh Championships in June and Dave Green is ranked first with 48.62. However, both will have to improve on their best best times to make an impact on the world stage.

For Rhys, this is a season to consolidate his fitness and form and he can start to look forward to next year's European Championships in Barcelona.

We wish him every success in Berlin.
