Clean sweep in Whitchurch

Sunday 30 April 2017

Cardiff's senior men took individual gold, silver and bronze medals at today's Welsh Championship 5k road race held around the streets of Whitchurch this evening.

With the streets thronged with hundreds of enthusiastic spectators, last year's winner Tom Marshall, just back from warm weather training in Portugal, retained his title in a record time of 14m35. Carwyn Jones was second and James Hunt third to clinch the team title for Cardiff.

In the ladies' race, Carys Hughes took the individual bronze medal and led the Cardiff team (Carys, Megan Friedli and Liz Davies) to the championship gold.

The race was held in cool and damp conditions but, luckily (and perhaps due to the presence as starter of BBC weatherman Derek Brockway - who also took part in the race), the heavy rain held off until most of the 1500 or so runners had passed the finish line.
