Cardiff on tour

Tuesday 14 July 2009

A great weekend flashed by for six Cardiff Amateur Athletic Club members when we attended the AVIVA National Trials in Birmingham 10th - 12th July. Every Welsh athlete and in particular the Cardiff AAC athletes were supported with cheers and we were not let down as two of our very own Cardiff athletes came home with medals; Bryony Raine took the bronze medal in the pole vault with a PB of 4.05m and Rhys Williams the silver medal in the 400m hurdles behind another Welshman David Greene (Swansea). This race was voted by us the ‘Athletics Highlight’ of the weekend.

It was also good to see former club members Paul Walker and Brett Morse gaining bronze and silver medals.

The great weekend was topped off with good food, good wine, good company, good weather and a perfect ‘tour’ hotel (Campanile, Aston Locks). So, as well as the time spent at Alexander Stadium, we were able to stroll along the canal for a coffee in the City centre, stopping on the way to chat to the holiday makers on the barges as they worked the locks. Who suggested we hire one of these for our next Birmingham tour? But before that we look forward to our next tour to Berlin and the World Championships in August.

Supporting athletics can be a great activity for all the family so why not join us and make Cardiff Amateur Athletic Club a real presence in the stand. If you are interested see Kay James, Dave or Enfys Hawthorn, Chris or Graham Webb or Kath Elias for advice or help.

Future tour possibilities:

Birmingham: Indoor International, February 2010
Birmingham: UK Trials Summer, 2010
Barcelona: European Championships, July 2010
Paris: European Indoor Championships, March 2011

We’ll keep you posted on the Club notice board.
