31 championship medals Sunday 29 January 2017

Thirty one medals were won by Cardiff athletes at the Welsh Athletics indoor championships held at Cardiff's NIAC yesterday, 28th January.

David Omoregie once again improved his indoor best over 60m hurdles with a time of 7.63 seconds which takes him to third place on the latest European rankings. He had, however, to take second place to GB international Andrew Pozzi who took the race, having run a European leading 7.56 in his heat.

Grants for six cardiff athletes Thursday 26 January 2017

In recognition of the potential talent of Cardiff's young athletes, six have been awarded development grants by the Ron Pickering Memorial Fund.

Grants are specifically aimed at helping young athletes who have shown above average talent and Cardiff athletes usually feature in the annual lists.

The Welsh Athletics junior indoor championships will take place over two days on 11th and 12th February and entries close on 26th January (that's TOMORROW).

All junior athletes are encouraged to enter these championships which provide excellent experience.

Good cross country weather Monday 23 January 2017

THe British Athletics Cardiff Cross Country Challenge, held yesterday at Blackweir, Cardiff was blessed with excellent conditions - no rain, little wind and fairly firm underfoot.

Numerous Cardiff athletes took part, with Matthew Clowes (running for Cardiff Met and Jacob Reynolds achieving the highest placings, Matthew taking fourth place in the senior men's race and Jacob coming home also in fourth in the under 13 boys' event.

No javelin training tonight Thursday 19 January 2017

Alyson Hourihan will not be at the stadium tonight as she is unwell.

She expects to be there next Monday as normal.

David Omoregie 2014

David Omoregie's two personal bests were amongst the highlights at yesterday's Cardiff Met indoor GP. After beating GB international Dwain Chambers in his heat of the open 60m in a personal best time of 6.71secs., David was just beaten by Dwain in the final. In the 60m hurdles, he was an easy winner, also in a personal best time of 7.66s.

Other good performances came from Curtis Mathews (a near pb long jump win with 6.90m), Alex Coomber (showing a welcome return to good form with a 800m win in 1:51.87), Lauren Evans (wins in the high jump and long jump) and Megan Hodgson (close to her pb in the pole vault).

Many Cardiff AAC athletes took part in the regional indoor championships for under 13/15/17 at the NIAC yesterday and were rewarded with medals of all colours.

Clean sweeps of all the medals (gold, silver and bronze) were won in the under 15 boys' 60m hurdles and long jump, the under 15 girls' 60m, the under 17 men's 60m and the under 17 women's pole vault.

Charlotte Arter 2016

Fresh from her record breaking victory in the Nos Galan on new year's eve, Charlotte Arter was the best British athlete in the international women's race in the Great Edinburgh Cross Country today.

After a steady start, Charlotte worked her way through the field to finish an excellent seventh in a high class international race, the first of the British team to finish and ahead of seasoned GB internationals including Steph Twell. The GB team finished in third place, on equal points with the USA, behind the winning Europe team.

A new year has started and a new series of championships is ahead, so this is a reminder not to miss the entry deadlines.

The Welsh Athletics senior indoor championships (including some junior events) take place in Cardiff on 28th January and entries close at 5pm on 9th January (next Monday).

The junior championships will be run over two days on 11th and 12th February and entries close on 26th January.

Nos Galan 2016

With perfect conditions for racing (mild and dry with no wind) New Year's Eve in Mountain Ash was the destination of choice for scores of Cardiff athletes.

Leading the pack were Charlotte Arter and Ieuan Thomas who both broke the course records in the elite senior races, Charlotte smashing her own record by eight seconds to win and Ieuan also improving the old time, in second place, a mere two seconds behind the winner.
