Welsh Road Relays Results

Wednesday 8 April 2009

Cardiff AAC teams had a fine day at the Welsh Road Relay Championships held at Parc Bryn Bach (near Tredegar) last Sunday, 5th April. Cardiff took the senior men’s and under 17 women’s titles, came second in the under 15 boys and third in the under 17 men. The picture shows Matt Collins bringing home the victorious men's team.

An outstanding run by the senior men’s team of Nat Lane, Chris Moss, Peter Ryder and Matt Collins included Chris Moss posting the fastest leg of the day (15.00), narrowly shading Nat Lane’s 15.04. Second were Swansea and third Carmarthen. Cardiff also fielded a B team of Tom Marshall, Andrew Friend, Ed Takata and Lewys Winfield–Young that came home in fourth place.

Pride of place among our ladies goes to the winning under 17 women’s team of Harriet Morris, Alice Johnston and Vicky Jackson. Vicky recorded the fastest leg of the day, clocking 11.09. Carmarthen were second and Menai third.

Silver medals were won by Cardiff’s under 15 boys team, Gareth Jones, Tom Howles and James Hunt having to concede first place to Newport.

In the under 17 men’s race, Cardiff’s Stefano Falsini, Joel Redman and Darren Jones gained the bronze medal behind winners Cwmbran and second placed Newport.

Even if out of the medals the under 13 boys team of Ciaran Lewis, Deon Garrison, Sam Gough and and Sam Peterken ran creditably for 5th place and the under 13 girls (Kate Seary, Francesca Falsini, Bethan Ellis and Francesca Morris) came 7th.

There was an interesting incident involving the under 15 girls when the Cardiff team came second in the race. Unfortunately the team had been completed only by including a runner from Swansea (everyone knew so there was no suggestion of funny practice) so could not count for the medals. Thanks go to Lucy Hammett from Swansea that enabled Lucy Harvey, Catrin Griffiths and Clare Harwood to run and, indeed, to run very well.
