Young Athletes aim high

Wednesday 17 June 2009

Cardiff's successful Young Athletes' League team could clinch promotion on Sunday next, 21 June. Having won all of their first three matches by considerable margins, a further win on Sunday would put them in an almost unbeatable position going into the fifth and final round on 19th July.

After three rounds, Cardiff leads its division with 12 points from Halesowen and Marlborough, both on 11 points. Cardiff has already met and defeated Halesowen and faces Marlborough along with Bridgnorth and Telford on Sunday. With two teams to be promoted, if Cardiff win on Sunday they will gain at least a two point margin over Marlborough and at least the one over Halesowen (depending on Halesowen's result). Cardiff expects to take a full and strong team to Telford on Sunday and should be confident (but not over confident we hope).

Team captains for the day will be Jonathan Pengelly and Harriet Morris. Jonathan has been an event winner in each of the first three matches and will be hoping to lead by example and continue his winning streak. In addition, many of the team have gained valuable experience in the recent Welsh championships where Cardiff athletes did so well.

The final match of the year will be at Swindon on 19 July where Cardiff will meet Swindon, Hereford and Newport.
