Senior women just miss

Tuesday 18 July 2017

Hoping to emulate the senior men's likely promotion to the premiership, Cardiff's senior women's team missed by an agonising 6.5 points in Manchester on Sunday.

Despite a fine team performance with athletes scoring points in unfamiliar events, a dropped baton in the 4x100m relay saw Cardiff finish second on the day and third over the three rounds; the first two teams are promoted.

The match result was:

1. Trafford AC (225 match points)
2. Cardiff AAC (218.5)
3. Southampton (202)
4. Notts AC (187)
5. Bristol & West AC (181)
6. Enfield & Haringey AC (141)
7. Harrow AC (113)
8. Bedford County AC (111.5)

The final league positions after three rounds are:

1. Trafford AC (22 league points)
2. Southampton AC (20)
3. Cardiff AAC (19)
4. Notts AC (17)
5. Enfield & Haringey AC (9)
6. Harrow AC (9)
7. Bristol & West AC (6)
8. Bedford County AC (6)

Southampton had been trailing the competition for most of the day but managed towards the end to pull up to finish in third place and deny Cardiff the second spot overall.

Cardiff's event winners were: Rachel Donnison (200m B); Rhiannon Linington-Payne (400m B); Lizzie Price (800m B); Rhianwedd Price 1500m B); Rebecca Chapman (long jump A); Sarah Buggy (triple jump A); 4xc400m relay.

It is invidious to pick out individuals as several athletes did multiple events but it is worth mentioning that Rhianwedd and Ffion Price between them covered seven events (Rhianwedd - 1500m, 2000m steeplechase and 400m hurdles and Ffion - 1500m, 400m hurdles, hammer and 4x400m relay). That typified the team spirit.

Third place is a big improvement on last year's fifth and with some talented young athletes about to join the senior ranks next year could well see the dream achieved.
