Senior men on the way up

Sunday 16 July 2017

Cardiff's British Athletics League team took another step towards promotion to the Premier Division at Bedford yesterday. Cardiff led for most of the day until Sale Harriers Manchester (who slipped from the Premiership last season and would like to get back) took over in the last few events.

Second place yesterday leaves Cardiff three points clear at the top of the division with one round left and the top two clubs at the end of the series gaining promotion.

The fight for the second promotion spot has hotted up as Swansea finished sixth yesterday, leaving them second but only one point ahead of Harrow who are only one half of a point ahead of fourth placed Sale; who will have the advantage of a home fixture in the final round.

The result yesterday was:

1. Sale Harriers Manchester (354)
2. Cardiff AAC (328.5)
3. Blackheath & Bromley H & AC (318)
4. Windsor Slough Eton & Hounslow AC (281)
5. Harrow AC (259)
6. Swansea H & AC (227)
7. Glasgow City AC (216.5)
8. Basingstoke & Mid Hants AC (183)

The positions after three rounds are:

1. Cardiff AAC (21) (943.5 match points)
2. Swansea H & AC (18) (880 match points)
3. Harrow AC (17) (867 match points)
4. Sale H Manchester (16.5) (914.5 match points)
5. Blackheath & Bromley H & AC (15)
6. Windsor Slough Eton & Hounslow AC (10.5)
7. Glasgow City AC (6.5)
8. Basingstoke & Mid Hants AC (3.5)

Cardiff's all-round peformance saw them through despite missing a few important athletes. One of the most unlucky was Ieuan Thomas who was on course to achieve a world championships qualifying time in the 3000m steeplechase before falling near the end of the race. Despite the fall he carried on to win the event.

Other Cardiff event winners were: Alex Coomber (800m A); Joe Reid (800m B); Owen Smith (400m A); Brett Morse (discus A); Jonathan Edwards (discus B); Jason Copsey (javelin A); Richard Dangerfield (javelin B); 4x400m relay).

The official results can be seen here.

The final match is in Manchester on 20th August.
