SSAFA win for Chris

Friday 26 June 2009

Chris Moss was the emphatic winner of the SSAFA 5k Road Race on Wednesday evening 24 June. In a tough, lonely run, he led from the early stages to win by 16 seconds. Chris was on course record pace at 2k in 5:27 but, in slightly windy conditions, faded to finish outside the mark set by Ben Noad. The battle for second was a much closer affair with Cardiff AAC's marathon man, Richie Gardiner, and Belgrave's Stephen Davies exchanging the lead before the track specialist Davies pulled away in the final 100 metres. Cardiff Club members Matthew Collins and Ed Takata were 4th and 5th respectively to help us take 4 of the first 5 places.

There was a touch of deja vu with Moss repeating his win in the first SSSAFA last month and last month's ladies' winner Angela Heeley of San Domenico, also first back this time.

Number's were up slightly on the first race, which is promising as the numbers do usually drop as the series goes on.

The next and this year's final SSSAFA is on July 22nd, with the stakes slightly higher as overall series prizes will be on the line and three other contests incorporated. The final race will host a mob match between Les Croupiers, Bridgend & Brackla, the Penarth and Dinas AC Club championship and a head to head between Cardiff and Swansea, with the last Swansea Bay 5k race this year hosting the second leg of their contest.

There is also interest from other  Cardiff club members who are targeting the course record of 14:29; including Michael Johnson who ran 29.51 in last year's Great Wales Run and has recently returned to form following injury.
