Dad cycles for charity Friday 16 July 2010

Melanie Stephenson

Cardiff sprinter and Welsh international Melanie Stephenson's father Derrick has cycled 250 miles from North to South Wales to raise more than £350 for the charity Diabetes UK. He took on this challenge as Melanie is diabetic, having been diagnosed with the Type 1 version nine years ago, when she was 13.

Cardiff's international 400m hurdler Rhys Williams took time out on Monday last, 12th July, to pass on some words of advice to three of Cardiff's young sprinter/hurdlers. Rhys is pictured at the club's home stadium with Rebecca Foley, Lara Durani and Tom Phillips, all of whom are coached by Helen James who arranged the session.

The Welsh under 20 and under 17 championships were held in Carmarthen on Saturday last, 10th July and Cardiff athletes topped the medal table with no fewer than 36 medals, including 15 gold. Pictured is Lewis Newton who won the under 20 pole vault with 4.20m. Jamaul Whyte celebrated his selection as Welsh schools' team captain by winning both the under 17 age group 100m and the 200m.

Jamaul Whyte

Cardiff AAC sprinter Jamaul Whyte (pictured) has been chosen as captain of the Welsh Schools' boys' team to contest the Schools International in Glasgow on Saturday next, 17th July. The club provides no fewer than 16 of the boys' and girls' team and follows their medal winning successes at the Welsh Schools' championship held in Brecon on 3rd July. Congratulations to all and good luck in Glasgow.

Top job for Nigel Walker Thursday 8 July 2010

Nigel Walker

Former Cardiff AAC club captain Nigel Walker has been appointed the National Director of the English Institute of Sport and will leave Wales to take up his new post later this year. Nigel was club captain for three years from 1989 to 1992, was Britain's leading 110m hurdler until the arrival of Colin Jackson and competed in the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. He also won bronze medals in both World and European Indoor Championships in 1987 at 60m hurdles.

Cardiff's Christian Malcolm and Rhys Williams have both been selected for Great Britain's team for the European Championships which start in Barcelona in three weeks time. Christian clinched his selection with a season's best 200m time of 20.50 in Switzerland on Sunday last, 4th July, after his fine victory in the UK Trials in Birmingham. Rhys has been enjoying his best season for four years, since he took the bronze medal at the last European Championships held in Gothenburg in 2006. He is ranked second in Europe behind fellow Welshman Dave Greene and will be hoping add to his medal collection in Barcelona.

Cardiff's UK Women's League team recorded a decisive win in their second round match at Bedford yesterday, Saturday 3rd July. Pictured is Imogen Miles receiving her athlete of the match award from former team manager John Penny. Imogen competed in three individual events plus a relay.

Cardiff's BAL team again finished second behind Sheffield today, thus consolidating second place overall in their division. Cardiff are now 4 points ahead of third placed Blackheath, with two rounds to go.

Cardiff's National Young Athletes' League team remains on course for a place in the area final after placing second to Rugby & Northampton in their third round match at Yeovil on 20th June. Cardiff was initially placed third but a protest by team manager Andrew Seary resulted in the scores being corrected.

Tomorrow, Saturday 3rd July, the club's British League team travels to Sheffield for this year's second round match while the UK Women's League team will be in Bedford the same day, also for the second round match. Both teams are in a strong position after the first round matches in Cardiff on 5th June and will be looking to consolidate promotion bids.
