Tom runs sub-four Friday 17 February 2017

Tom Marshall 2017

Cardiff's Tom Marshall joined club-mate Ieuan Thomas as a member of the sub-four-minute mile club in the AIT indoor grand prix at Athlone, Ireland, on Wednesday, 15th February.

Running at a perfectly judged pace, Tom closed a big gap to the leaders over the final two laps to finish third in an international race in a time of 3:59.84.

The Welsh Athletics junior age groups indoor championships were held at Cardiff's NIAC on Saturday and Sunday last and, as usual, Cardiff athletes collected plenty of medals and personal bests.

Several athletes took part in multiple events including Ben Henson (4 events - 2 medals), Ben Hillman (3 events - 3 medals), Lauren Evans (3 events - 3 medals) and Tom Britt (3 events - 3 medals).

Ieuan Thomas 2014 half marathon

Cardiff athletes were in action in the Gwent Cross Country League and the Welsh Indoor Junior Championships as well as at the UK Championships/Team Trials in Sheffield.

Those venturing north to Sheffield were rewarded with four personal bests and one seasonal best whilst those travelling to Newport for the Gwent League had to endure miserable conditions (a separate report will be posted later).

New club records Friday 10 February 2017


Cardiff's age group record lists are of of very high quality and these records are not broken very often. In 2016 just six new records were set.

Brooke Annandale improved Lauren Evan's under 13 girls' long jump record to 4.62m, Cassey Grimwade improved Ffion Palmer's under 15 girls' hammer mark to 43.19m, Jay Morse improved Matthew Field's under 17 men's hammer record to 52.67m and the under 17 women's 4x300m relay team (Lana Culliford, Jessica Wadey, Jessica Hill & Naomi Reid) set a new best time of 2:54.26.

Jac Palmer posted a new senior men's hammer record of 64.81m and Bethan Davies set a new time of 1:33.48 for the 20k race walk.

All the records, updated to January 2017, will be posted on the club notice board and can be seen on the website.


Sub-4m mile for Ieuan Tuesday 7 February 2017


Cardiff's Ieuan Thomas is only the fourth Welsh athlete of all time to run one mile indoors in less than four minutes and the first to do so in Wales.

During the Cardiff Met indoor Grand Prix at Cardiff's NIAC on Sunday last, 5th February, Ieuan finished well ahead of the field to beat the magic time with 3:59.31. 

Gwent League resumes Thursday 2 February 2017

U15 Brecon

The popular Gwent Cross Country League resumes next week on Sunday, 12th february, with the fourth round fixture in Newport.

After three rounds, Cardiff AAC leads the team rankings for under 17 and under 20 men as well as under 17 and 20 women. The senior men are in second place while under 13 boys and girls, under 15 girls and senior women are fourth, with good chances of improving. 

31 championship medals Sunday 29 January 2017

Thirty one medals were won by Cardiff athletes at the Welsh Athletics indoor championships held at Cardiff's NIAC yesterday, 28th January.

David Omoregie once again improved his indoor best over 60m hurdles with a time of 7.63 seconds which takes him to third place on the latest European rankings. He had, however, to take second place to GB international Andrew Pozzi who took the race, having run a European leading 7.56 in his heat.

Grants for six cardiff athletes Thursday 26 January 2017


In recognition of the potential talent of Cardiff's young athletes, six have been awarded development grants by the Ron Pickering Memorial Fund.

Grants are specifically aimed at helping young athletes who have shown above average talent and Cardiff athletes usually feature in the annual lists.

The Welsh Athletics junior indoor championships will take place over two days on 11th and 12th February and entries close on 26th January (that's TOMORROW).

All junior athletes are encouraged to enter these championships which provide excellent experience.

Good cross country weather Monday 23 January 2017

Eden Williams 2017

THe British Athletics Cardiff Cross Country Challenge, held yesterday at Blackweir, Cardiff was blessed with excellent conditions - no rain, little wind and fairly firm underfoot.

Numerous Cardiff athletes took part, with Matthew Clowes (running for Cardiff Met and Jacob Reynolds achieving the highest placings, Matthew taking fourth place in the senior men's race and Jacob coming home also in fourth in the under 13 boys' event.
