Medals galore for juniors Monday 8 June 2009


Cardiff's young athletes grabbed an impressive haul of medals yesterday in the Welsh Junior and Under 17 championships at Newport. With the weather kinder than the day before for league matches in Cardiff, a total of 30 gold, silver and bronze awards came Cardiff's way. May's athlete of the month Sam Cogan improved her personal best yet again with a 40.69sec time in the U17 300m.

League teams' strong start Sunday 7 June 2009

Cardiff's men's British League got off to a brilliant start in Cardiff yesterday, winning their first round match by the narrow margin of 5 points from Harrow, with old rivals Thames Valley Harriers third. The women's League team, weakened by late withdrawals, exceeded expectations by finishing fourth. These are the best starts to the league campaigns for many years.

Warm and windy conditions in Neath on Tuesday evening, 3rd June, were the setting as Simon Lawson, who recently set the new UK Half Marathon U20 record, completed a fantastic 10,000m race, smashed the standing Welsh Junior Record and beat the European Junior Championships Qualifying standard. Both Lawson and Dewi Griffiths went below the 30:40 time set as a benchmark for consideration for the GB team competing in the Euros this summer - an impressive achievement for the two youngsters. His time takes Simon to second place in the latest European rankings.

Cardiff's British League team gets its 2009 campaign underway next Saturday, 6th June, with a home match which is being held jointly with the UK Women's League first round match. A potentially strong team is expected to improve on last year's position; with the added incentive of again meeeting local rivals Swansea.

Young Athletes lead Monday 1 June 2009


Cardiff's Young Athletes' League team gained a convincing win over rivals Halesowen in Saturday's match at Neath to put them in a strong position for immediate promotion back to the Premier Division. Cardiff scored 453 points against Halesowen's 345. Cwmbran were third and Llanelli & Neath fourth.

A strong mixture of good results for Cardiff athletes included an excellent performance by our younger athletes in the Welsh Junior League at Aberdare, a new Welsh Triple Jump record for Sara Barry and personal bests for Tom Miller, Tom Knight, Liam Duff, Chris Howe, Joe Maynard and Nathan Felvus in Guernsey.

Championship deadlines Sunday 24 May 2009

Welsh championships are important steps in an athlete's development so do not miss the entry dates. The closing date for the Under 17 and Under 20 championships is only 7 days away, on 29 May, and all Cardiff AAC athletes are encouraged to take part. SSAFA Road Race results Saturday 23 May 2009

Road running

The first of this year’s series of the annual SSAFA 5K road races was held last Wednesday, 20th May around Cardiff’s beautiful Bute Park and Blackweir fields. The race is organized in aid of the Soldiers, Sailors and Air Force Association and all income from entry fees goes towards the association’s charities. The field of 86 runners was small in number but high in quality and some thought that the course record of 14m21 would be threatened.

Cardiff AAC and Olympic athlete Christian Malcolm will be the home team captain at next month’s Super8 competition to be held at the capital’s Cardiff International Sports Stadium on Wednesday 10th June. Christian Malcolm said of his appointment: “It really is an honour to be asked to captain Cardiff at the first Super8 competition, not only to lead the Welsh athletes but also to do so on home turf is going to be very special.
