Welcome to Wales' Premier Athletic Club

Goodbye Mary Friday 3 July 2009

Mary Webb

Mary Webb, long standing Cardiff club member and athletics fanatic, passed away peacefully two days ago after finally succumbing to the cancer that she had contracted three years ago. Her final athletics honour was to receive Welsh Athletics' Meritorious Award for services to athletics in Wales which was taken to her by club chairman and Welsh Athletics Vice-President John Penny. Mary had been involved in athletics since competing as a schoolgirl and joined Cardiff AAC in 1973 when she brought daughter Sue to the club. She and her family (husband Brian and subsequently son in law Rob Hooper) have been members ever since and have all made important contributions to club life.

Key match for BAL team Thursday 2 July 2009

BAL logo

Bromley plays host to its first ever British League fixture on Saturday, 4th July, and it could prove a significant day for a number of Cardiff AAC athletes in the second British League fixture of 2009. Cardiff won the first match, held in Cardiff on 6th June, and lead the table. Fresh from his recent AAA’s triumph and selection for the European Junior championships 10,000m, Simon Lawson chases the qualifying mark of 14.30 in the 5k. Despite being a member of Cardiff for a number of years this will actually be his British League debut. Making their season debuts are two of Cardiff's best ever jumpers as GB internationals Gary White and Elliot O’Neill open their seasons in the triple jump and long jump respectively. Both men are coming back from injuries but are rounding into shape nicely and hope to use this match as a springboard for the AAA’s next week. They will be accompanied in the jumps by Welsh junior champion Tom Kivell.

Busy weekend for schools Thursday 2 July 2009

YAL 17 5 09 (4).

The Welsh Schools championships take place at Cardiff International Sports Stadium on Saturday next, 4th July and many of the club's young athletes who have been in our successful Young Athletes' League team will be competing for their schools. It is an important step for a young athlete to win a schools title and we wish everyone the very best of luck.

Simon and David in GB team Wednesday 1 July 2009

David Guest

Simon Lawson, who took the national 5,000m title last Sunday, has been included in the first wave of UK Athletics' selections of the Great Britain team to take part in the European Junior Championships. He has been selected in the 10,000m where he is ranked third fastest in Europe this year. David Guest (pictured), who competes for Cardiff as a Higher Competition athlete has also been selected, in the decathlon.

Simon Lawson takes title Sunday 28 June 2009

Simon Lawson

Simon Lawson (ranked third in Europe over 10,000m) was a clear winner of the national Junior 5,000m title at Bedford today. His winning time of 14.39.03 was well inside European Athletics qualification time of 14.45 but outside the harder target (14.30) for automatic selection for the European Junior Championships set by UK Athletics. Presumably Simon would opt for the longer distance in Novi-Sad. Other Cardiff athletes enjoyed mixed successes at the Under 23 and Under 20 championships. Tom Marshall took the Under 23 bronze medal in the 5,000m in 14.42.31 behind winner Jonathan Taylor and silver medallist Lewis Timmins, both from North Eastern club Morpeth Harriers.

Athletes bid for titles Saturday 27 June 2009

Joe Thomas

A group of talented Cardiff athletes today start their bids to shine at the UK Under 23 and Under 20 championships taking place today and tomorrow at Bedford. At stake for some are not only national championship medals but also possible selection to represent Great Britain at the European U23 and U20 championships in Kaunas and Novi-Sad respectively.

SSAFA win for Chris Friday 26 June 2009

Chris Moss

Chris Moss was the emphatic winner of the SSAFA 5k Road Race on Wednesday evening 24 June. In a tough, lonely run, he led from the early stages to win by 16 seconds. Chris was on course record pace at 2k in 5:27 but, in slightly windy conditions, faded to finish outside the mark set by Ben Noad. The battle for second was a much closer affair with Cardiff AAC's marathon man, Richie Gardiner, and Belgrave's Stephen Davies exchanging the lead before the track specialist Davies pulled away in the final 100 metres. Cardiff Club members Matthew Collins and Ed Takata were 4th and 5th respectively to help us take 4 of the first 5 places.

Promotion beckons Tuesday 23 June 2009

YAL team Telford

Cardiff's Young Athletes' League team again dominated the fourth round fixture on Sunday, 21st June, at Telford, easily winning with 463.5 points from home club Telford. Potential rivals for promotion Marlborough were pushed into third place, effectively eliminating any chance of their challenging Cardiff for one of the two promotion spots. Cardiff can now go on to the final fixture in Swindon on 19th July virtually certain to be promoted.

Tim wins for Britain Monday 22 June 2009

Tim Benjamin

Tim Benjamin returned to the Great Britain athletics team competing in the new European Athletics Team Championship with an impressive win in the 400m on Saturday last, clocking 45.57 sec. In sweltering conditions (around 40 degrees on the track) Tim ran a controlled race to beat a strong international field. On the second day of competition, Tim anchored the British 4 x 400m relay team to a comfortable victory in the final event of the 2 day competition, held on 20/21 June in Leiria, Portugal. The Great Britain combined men's and women's team finished third behind winners Germany and second placed Russia with France pushed into fourth place.

Young Athletes aim high Wednesday 17 June 2009

YAL 17 5 09 (4).

Cardiff's successful Young Athletes' League team could clinch promotion on Sunday next, 21 June. Having won all of their first three matches by considerable margins, a further win on Sunday would put them in an almost unbeatable position going into the fifth and final round on 19th July.
