Key weekend for teams Thursday 16 July 2009

Runners

Over the next weekend, three of the club teams will be competing in key competitions. The Young Athletes' League team will travel to Swindon on Sunday for the fifth and final round of the season; which will be the promotion decider. The senior men's and women's teams travel to London, bidding for a place in the BAL Golden Jubilee Cup for the first time. Success is on the horizon.

Cardiff on tour Tuesday 14 July 2009

Club group at UK Champs 2009

A great weekend flashed by for six Cardiff Amateur Athletic Club members when we attended the AVIVA National Trials in Birmingham 10th - 12th July. Every Welsh athlete and in particular the Cardiff AAC athletes were supported with cheers and we were not let down as two of our very own Cardiff athletes came home with medals; Bryony Raine took the bronze medal in the pole vault with a PB of 4.05m and Rhys Williams the silver medal in the 400m hurdles behind another Welshman David Greene (Swansea). This race was voted by us the ‘Athletics Highlight’ of the weekend.

Mixed fortunes Sunday 12 July 2009

In blustery conditions, with occasional rain, the Welsh under 13 and under 15 championships were held yesterday at Cardiff International Sports Stadium. Cardiff athletes took their fair share of medals but, overall, the turnout of club athletes was smaller than expected. Gold medals were achieved by Kate Seary,Ffion Bodilly, Sally Nicholas and Ben Pearse.

Award for Kay James Friday 10 July 2009

Kay James

Long standing club member Kay James has been presented with Welsh Athletics’ Award of Honour for her services to athletics in Wales. During the past ten years (and more), she has, at various times, been secretary of both her club and the South Wales Region. Additionally, she has been the club’s long standing track and field secretary and event organiser. For the past three years, a period during which the Region did not have a secretary she was effectively the minutes secretary. Because she has been around for so many years and both knows and is known by the vast majority of officials in the southern half of Wales, she has been a key person whenever the Region or the club has organised competition, whether track and field or cross country. Put simply, she has been the one to find sufficient numbers of officials.

Champagne time Thursday 9 July 2009

Threshers & James Thie

This year, the athletes producing the best performances in each match of our senior men's British League and senior women's UK Womens's League teams have each been awarded a bottle of champagne. The champagne has been kindly donated by Darren Davies of Threshers Wine Shop, Albany Road, Cardiff. We are grateful to Darren who is seen with club captain James Thie.

Cardiff athletes shine Monday 6 July 2009

The Welsh Schools' championships, held at Cardiff International Sports Stadium last Saturday, 4th July, was a shop window for Cardiff AAC members, who collected medals galore. These are also the athletes who make up the club's successful Young Athletes' League team so it was perhaps not surprising.

BAL team retains lead Sunday 5 July 2009

The first match, which Cardiff won, was always going to be difficult to follow but Cardiff AAC finished the day top of the overall league standings…just! At the end of the second round match, 5 teams are separated by just 2 match points, which makes it look like the league 2 division will be the hardest to call. Performance of the day came from the ever present Gareth Warburton, who front ran 1.50.52 in hot windy conditions; he also ended the day with a fantastic 47 second last leg in the relay for the club to take maximum points. Joe Maynard employed similar tactics to take the B 800 by nearly 4 seconds with a 1.51.99 clocking. This means that Cardiff have won every 800 race so far this year in British League.

Goodbye Mary Friday 3 July 2009

Mary Webb

Mary Webb, long standing Cardiff club member and athletics fanatic, passed away peacefully two days ago after finally succumbing to the cancer that she had contracted three years ago. Her final athletics honour was to receive Welsh Athletics' Meritorious Award for services to athletics in Wales which was taken to her by club chairman and Welsh Athletics Vice-President John Penny. Mary had been involved in athletics since competing as a schoolgirl and joined Cardiff AAC in 1973 when she brought daughter Sue to the club. She and her family (husband Brian and subsequently son in law Rob Hooper) have been members ever since and have all made important contributions to club life.

Key match for BAL team Thursday 2 July 2009

BAL logo

Bromley plays host to its first ever British League fixture on Saturday, 4th July, and it could prove a significant day for a number of Cardiff AAC athletes in the second British League fixture of 2009. Cardiff won the first match, held in Cardiff on 6th June, and lead the table. Fresh from his recent AAA’s triumph and selection for the European Junior championships 10,000m, Simon Lawson chases the qualifying mark of 14.30 in the 5k. Despite being a member of Cardiff for a number of years this will actually be his British League debut. Making their season debuts are two of Cardiff's best ever jumpers as GB internationals Gary White and Elliot O’Neill open their seasons in the triple jump and long jump respectively. Both men are coming back from injuries but are rounding into shape nicely and hope to use this match as a springboard for the AAA’s next week. They will be accompanied in the jumps by Welsh junior champion Tom Kivell.

Busy weekend for schools Thursday 2 July 2009

YAL 17 5 09 (4).

The Welsh Schools championships take place at Cardiff International Sports Stadium on Saturday next, 4th July and many of the club's young athletes who have been in our successful Young Athletes' League team will be competing for their schools. It is an important step for a young athlete to win a schools title and we wish everyone the very best of luck.
