New throwing initiative

Friday 4 August 2017

The first of what will become a regular series of throwing competitions took place at Cardiff International Sports Campus on Tuesday evening.

Called the Cardiff AAC Young Throwers Invitational and held under the umbrella of Cardiff AAC, the idea was initiated by Brett Morse, Lisa Grimwade and Ian Leek and supported by the general committee.

The competition is a closed event by invitation only and primarily for children/young adults U13 to U20s, with occasional guest throwers. At present numbers are restricted to six for each event.

The first event was by invitation only and eleven athletes contested the hammer throw and discus.

The initial competition was of high quality with a number of leading Welsh and UK throwers. These included the 2016 U15 women's discus Welsh champion Anais Rowands; Bethan Gammon, who is currently ranked as No 1. Welsh U17 womens hammer thrower; the current No.1 UK ranked U17 discus male Jay Morse; the 2016 U17 male Welsh hammer Champion Kieran Grimwade; the current No.1 ranked Welsh U15 hammer and Welsh ranked No.2 U15 discus thrower Cassey Grimwade; current Welsh No.3 U13 discus thrower Ethan Witchell; Ben Hillman currently ranked 8th in Wales for U15 discus; and Caitlin Chapman who this season has made good progress in the hammer event.

The highlight of the evening was a new personal best throw by Kieran Grimwade who launched his 6kg hammer to an impressive 58.47m.

It was also great to see Cardiff AAC men's club captain and 2012 Olympian Brett Morse supporting the event. His tips to all the young throwers in the discus event were very welcome.

The results were:

Hammer Throw:

Under 20 men: Kieran Grimwade - 58.47m (personal best)
