New challenge for Matt

Saturday 8 May 2010

Cardiff athlete and Commonwealth medallist Matt Elias has joined Welsh Athletics in a part-time capacity to help support the development of the sport in both clubs and schools. Matt is combining this part-time job with training to achieve his ambition of making a fourth appearance at a Commonwealth Games in a Welsh vest. He also hopes to make the British team for the European Championships, perhaps teaming up with fellow Cardiff member Rhys Williams.

Working as a Development Officer in South East Wales, Matt will be involved in supporting clubs with their development, increasing opportunities for school athletes as well as assisting with the delivery of the Aviva UKA Academy programme.

Following a brief introductory period, he has literally ‘hit the ground running’ having already visited a number of clubs across the region and been involved with a number of key initiatives. Matt’s support has been welcomed by many coaches and volunteers within clubs as well as by a number of schools within the locality.

“I have really enjoyed being part of the team at Welsh Athletics and have learnt a great deal since starting the role and received great support which has helped me through the initial weeks in this post” said Matt.

“I obviously have a lot of experience in the sport and progressed through both the Club and Schools athletics systems. This appreciation of the challenges faced will hopefully allow me to help the next generation of athletes and support clubs in their development. I have had an excellent reception at a number of clubs and have been really encouraged by the amount of positive things that I have witnessed”.

We wish Matt every success in his new position.
