Medals galore for juniors

Monday 8 June 2009

Cardiff's young athletes grabbed an impressive haul of medals yesterday in the Welsh Junior and Under 17 championships at Newport. With the weather kinder than the day before for league matches in Cardiff, a total of 30 gold, silver and bronze awards came Cardiff's way. May's athlete of the month Sam Cogan improved her personal best yet again with a 40.69sec time in the U17 300m.

British League athlete of the match David Guest followed up his three events on Saturday, at the same time showing his versatility, by taking three gold medals; in the 110mH, High Jump and Pole Vault. David was yesterday representing his first claim club Bridgend as he represents Cardiff as a "higher competition" athlete.

Double gold medallists for Cardiff were Gareth Hopkins (U20 100m & 200m) and Jacob Matthews (U20 Shot Put & Discus). The U20 200m saw a clean sweep of medals for Cardiff with Gareth Hopkins, Thomas Knight and Chris Howe taking gold, silver and bronze respectively.
