Medals for miles

Saturday 30 September 2017

The Welsh Athletics road mile championships were held today, prior to tomorrow's Cardiff half marathon and attracted enthusiastic runners and spectators.

The first event of the day was the under 11 girls' mile and victory went to Cardiff's Alice Davies with Millie Gold third. Most of the other races saw Cardiff athletes in the first three and Tom Marshall retained his senior men's title, breaking his own course record with a time of 4:15.00, with Ieuan Thomas second and Sam Blake fourth.

Cardiff's other winners were Nia Clatworthy (under 15 girls), Jacob Reynolds (under 15 boys) and Emily Brown (senior women).

The full list of Cardiff first three performers is:

Under 11 girls: Alice Davies (1st); Millie Gold (3rd).
Under 13 girls: Jemima Robinson (2nd).
Under 13 boys: Ben Macey (2nd); Ben Farrell (3rd).
Under 15 girls: Nia Clatworthy (1st).
Under 15 boys: Jacob Reynolds (1st).
Under 17 men: Larry Ryan )2nd).
Masters Men (35+): James Thie (1st).

The full results can be seen here.

These races are a good innovation and are now in their third year. Although the races were very competitive it was disappointing that so few Welsh club runners had entered.
