Let's not forget Christian

Wednesday 13 January 2010

Whilst delighted that Jamie Baulch is going to receive his gold medal after being promoted from silver at the World Championships in Athens, we should think of club star Christian Malcolm who suffered the disapppointment of losing one of his gold medals. Christian was a member of the winning British 4x100 relay team at the 2002 European Championships in Munich but had to give back his medal as the team was subsequently disqualified when Dwain Chambers admitted to doping offences. Despite this loss Christian still has a fantastic collection of medals.

Christian was an outstanding Junior and was also coached by Jock Anderson who had set Jamie Baulch on his career.

In 1997, aged 18, Christian went to the European Junior Championships and came back with two gold medals (200m and 4x100m relay) and a silver (100m).

The following year he became the fastest junior sprinter in the world, winning both the 100m and 200m at the World Junior Championships.

Also in 1998, still a junior, he won an individual silver medal in the 200m at the Commonwealth Games.

In 1999 he took the individual 100m bronze  medal, the 200m silver medal and a gold in the 4x100m relay at the European Under 23 Championships.

Christian won three individual medals at indoor championships, taking Gold at the Europeans in 2000, silver at the Worlds in 2001 and silver again at the Europeans in 2002.

A great disappointment for Christian was when a sudden illness deprived him of his rightful place in the British 4x100m relay team that took the gold medal in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. He would have been a certain member of the squad but had to watch from the stands as his team mates ran for glory.

His most recent medals were both bronze in the 4x100m relays at the World Championships 2005 and 2007.

Christian has been an outstanding athlete and a great ambassador for the sport. In recent years, he has struggled with illness and injury but is hoping for selection for this year's European Championships and Commonwealth Games.

We wish him every success.
