Finalists again

Tuesday 25 July 2017

On a typical summer's day (cold, windy and intermittent rain), Cardiff's Welsh Junior League team comfortably qualified for the all-Welsh final, finishing second at Newport on Saturday last.

Cardiff has won the national final for the past two years and will be looking to make it three in a row. The final is in Newport on 6th August.

The match result on Saturday was:

1. Cardiff Archers (1416 points)
2. Cardiff AAC (1338)
3. Rhymney Valley AC (1020)
4. Newport H AC (915)
5. Blaenau Gwent AC (700)
6. Cwmbran H (679)
7. Hereford & County AC (401)
8. Rhondda AC (267)
9. Aberdare AC (119)

Cardiff's individual event winners were:

Under 11 girls: Ffione Butler (150m heat 1); Alexa Tiso (javelin).

Under 11 boys: Leon Gregson (75m hurdles heat 2); Gethin Dobbs (150m heat 5).

Under 13 girls: Anna Halliday (100m heat 1); Molly Type (100m heat 5 & 200m heat 2); Jemima Robinson (1500m); Molly McKerlich (1000m walk); Megan Hastings (70m hurdles heat 1).

Under 13 boys: Josh Beecher (100m heat 4); Charlie Stockley-Jones (200m heat 2); Elis Finlayson (800m heat 2); Ben Macey (1500m); Thomas Reid (javelin).

Under 15 girls: Mary Ryan (100m heat 1); Sadie Graham-Mulvaney (100m heat 5); Darcy John Cook (300m heat 1); Georgina Edwards (800m heat 1); Nia Clatworthy (800m heat 2); Cassey Grimwade (discus & hammer); Emma Fitzherbert (javelin).

Under 15 boys: Tomas Charles (200m heat 3); Carwyn Hastings (300m heat 1); Joe Alexander (80m hurdles); Ben Hillman (pole vault & discus); Ben Vincent (long jump); Tyler Santos (javelin).

Amongst some excellent performances, two under 11s were noted for the future. Alice Davies was the second fastest in the 800m but ran a very mature race for one so young; and in the boys' 800m Oliver Reynolds showed great determination to hold off his rival in a sprint finish to the line. It was also nice to see six (yes, six) Cardiff vests cross the line first in the under 13 girls' 200m.
