Ffion is best in Britain

Monday 23 August 2010

Cardiff's Ffion Bodilly took the high jump Gold Medal at the England Athletics Under 17 Championships in Bedford last Saturday, 21 August. In very difficult conditions for high jumping, caused by a strong and gusting wind, Ffion not only won the competition but set a new personal best of 1.73m and jumped to second on this year's British rankings. Ffion, coached by Stephen Bailey, is still only 15 so will have a further year in this age category.

Her performance is all the more creditable as traffic congestion meant that she arrived at the stadium after the long drive from Cardiff only 45 minutes before her event. Nevertheless, she cleared every height at her first attempt, eventually failing at 1.76m, and triumphed over Kate Anson, the favourite and leading jumper of the year with 1.78m to her credit, who could manage only 1.60m at Bedford.

Congratulations to Ffion and to Stephen.
