Cardiff dominate

Thursday 26 August 2010

Cardiff's Michael Johnson (pictured) was a runaway winner of the Welsh Championship 5k road race held in Swansea last Sunday, 22nd August, and led the Cardiff team to the team title. Also successful was the club's women's team which, although not including the individual winner, took the team title. First lady home for Cardiff was Paris Williams in 4th place.

Conditions were perfect for the race, after days of heavy rain and wind. The morning was still and sunny, perfect for running on Swansea's seafront.

Despite a last minute change of course due to highway restrictions, the Welsh 5k Championships turned out to be a fast course for Michael Johnson who won by over a minute with a time of 14:26, taking 14 seconds off his personal best. After tripping during last year's championships when finishing second, Michael was out to prove a point this time around.

In the lead from gun to tape, Johnson proved to be over his injury problems and looking forward to the Welsh 10k Championships and Welsh Half Marathon Championships in the coming months.

Completing Cardiff's team were Peter Ryder (5th), Michael Kershaw (6th) and Matthew Drury (11th).

The men's team result was: 1. Cardiff (26);  2. Carmarthen (47);  3. Neath (55).

The lady's team was Paris Williams (4th),  Emily Brown (5th) and Emily Strange (7th).

The ladies' team result was:  1. Cardiff (16);  2. Swansea A (43);  3. Swansea B (59).
