Athletes bid for titles

Saturday 27 June 2009

A group of talented Cardiff athletes today start their bids to shine at the UK Under 23 and Under 20 championships taking place today and tomorrow at Bedford. At stake for some are not only national championship medals but also possible selection to represent Great Britain at the European U23 and U20 championships in Kaunas and Novi-Sad respectively.

A leading contender amongst the Cardiff contingent is 800m specialist Joe Thomas and it will also be interesting to see how Simon Lawson contends with the opposition in the 5000m. Simon set a new Welsh Junior record for 10000m earlier this year that took him to second place in the European Rankings (he is currently third). Other Cardiff athletes entered are:

Under 23:  Tom Miller (400m);  Harry Jones (1500m);  Tom Marshall (5000m);  Jessica Abrahams (Pole Vault);  Hannah Abrahams (Pole Vault);  Lianne Clarke (Javelin).

Under 20:  Gareth Hopkins (100m/200m);  Tom Knight (200m);  Sam Conway (400m);  Nathan Felvus (400m);  Jacob Matthews (Shot/Discus);  Leah Dixon (3000m); Elinor Lewis (Pole Vault).

This championship represents tough competition so good luck to all.

Results will be posted as soon as available.
