Match Report

On a cold, windy and occasionally rainy day, Cardiff's UK Youth Development League (lower age group) team returned to Yate yesterday for the second round match of this year's series.

After just coming third in the first match, a depleted team slipped to fourth and will need a much improved performance next time to avoid missing out on a place in the regional final (only the first three qualify), to be held in Cardiff on 15th July.

As can be seen from the results, the under 15 boys and girls piled up the points but, although those who turned out did well to support the team, the under 13 boys and girls were extrememely disappointing, especially those (and you know who you are) who simply ignored selection notices or just did not turn up. This is extremely unfair to those who do compete and to the team managers who volunteer their sevices to help the athletes and the club. There are plenty of under 13 athletes in the Academy and it is a mystery why they will not compete. They must do better.

Outstanding among the under 15s were Ben Hillman, who won the 100m, long jump and 80m hurdles A events, the Reynolds brothers (Jacob demolished the field in the A 1500m and brother Ben did the same in the 800m B) and Nia Clatworthy who ran a mature race to win the 1500m A race.

Cassey Grimwade competed in the shot, discus and hammer, winning the latter with another new club record of 45.68m.

In the under 13 category, Ben Hughes was the only individual winner (in the 800m B race) but a big thank you must go to the others in this age group who filled in unfamiliar events for the good of the team.

Cardiff's individual event winners were:

Under 15 boys
: Ben Hillman (100m A & 80mH A & long jump A); Ben Reynolds (800m B); Jacob Reynolds (1500m A); Iwan Smith (1500m B); Matthew Register (80mH B); Ben Vincent (long jump B); Evan Morgan (discus A & high jump B); Lloyd Clarke (javelin A & discus B).

Under 15 girls: Nia Clatworthy (1500m A); Cassey Grimwade (hammer A).

Under 13 boys: Ben Hughes (800m B).

The team result was:

1. Swansea H & AC (564.5 points)
2. Yate & Districh AC (523)
3. Cardiff Archers (522)
4. Cardiff AAC (465)
5. Cheltenham & County AC (430)
6. Bristol & West/ Mendips AC (385)

After two rounds, the league standings are:

1. Swansea H & AC (12 league points)
2. Yate & Disctrict AC (10 league points)
3. Cardiff Archers (7 league points) (1000 match points)

5. Cheltenham & County AC (4 league points)
6. Bristol & West / Mendips AC (2 league points)

The official results can be seen here.
